A year in review

Despite facing unprecedented times, including major internal restructuring and a global health crisis, FIATA has accomplished many milestones this year. Fuelled by its ‘reset programme’ initiative to reenergize the organization, FIATA is determined to advocate trade facilitation policies that will reposition the organization as the key global freight logistics actor.

1 Jan: Dr Stéphane Graber starts new role as FIATA Director General

12 Mar: The World Health Organization calls COVID-19 a pandemic

22 Mar: 2020 HQ Meeting in Zurich cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak

Apr-May: FIATA publishes various position papers with practical advice on managing COVID-19 challenges on its dedicated online platform

18 May: The FIATA office moves from Zurich to international Geneva

19 May: A digital strategy is approved by FIATA Presidency for the coming years

25 May: FIATA stands with stranded seafarers and calls for governments to take urgent action to repatriate them  

1 Jun: New FIATA team is fully operational in Geneva

8 Jun: 2020 FIATA World Congress in Busan postponed due to pandemic

Jul: The FIATA website is revamped, the newsletter and magazine are also rebooted with a new design and editorial direction

13 Jul: New FIATA Logistics Institute defines scope of work and calls for nomination of chair

20 Sep: FIATA participates in TIACA’s webinar on ‘Decarbonizing Air Cargo’

2 Oct: FIATA participates in UNESCAP’s Regional Conversation Series for Building Back Better on ‘Resilient Supply Chains and Connectivity’

26 Oct: FMC toolkit published on unjust demurrage and detention practices

29 Oct: The Presidency adopts Regional Rules for all FIATA regions

30 Nov: The Presidency approves the proof of concept for the digitalization of the FIATA Bill of Lading

1 Dec: Best practice guide released on abandoned goods

7 Dec: FIATA General Meeting takes place virtually

10 Dec: FIATA participates in TIACA’s Digital Air Cargo Forum on ‘Uniting Air Cargo’

Increased digital connectivity with FIATA members

Altogether, the FIATA Headquarters organized more than 100 meetings of the Presidency, Extended Board, Institutes and Advisory Bodies in the course of 2020, to discuss industry challenges and report on the progress made on ongoing work. This was critical to answer the COVID-19 pandemic in ensuring digital connectivity of FIATA’s members with their organization during these unprecedented times.
