FIATA - Together we are strong!

Zurich, 19 March 2020 - FIATA, the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations, today voiced its concern as to the impact of the current Coronavirus crisis on the movement of goods, and calls for the relaxation of a variety of governmental and non-governmental entities monopolistic positions at ports and airports as to fiscal charges. With rapid escalation of travel restrictions and closed borders as to people movement, the movement of goods has also been compromised.

FIATA President, Basil Pietersen, in a communique to members noted that these are unprecedented times where in most of our living memories has the world faced such a global crisis. With the priority being to combat the global health pandemic by governments, FIATA sees a need to also focus on the business outcomes which drive our societal and personal outcomes.

The global supply chain, while compromised, continues to be operational however in a very fractured state. It is known that the revival of national economies is totally linked to global trade and while governments may set the policy on such, it is traders who trade and FIATA members who ensure the delivery of those goods to users and consumers. Shipping lines, airlines and other transport operators provide the conveyance and are chosen as the method of transport most cost effective by the international freight forwarder. So, in this logistics struggle freight forwarders are a key component.

The role of FIATA members is to ensure the supply of food and basic necessities for communities and economies and their citizens affected by Covid-19.

While FIATA notes the resilience of its National Association affiliates and their members, FIATA calls its community to unite and convey a clear and concise message to their respective National governments that the freight forwarders will be pivotal to each economy’s revival and need to be at the heart of what will be required in trade facilitation reform.

FIATA has called for its National Association to meet the challenge of their members in being recognized as a “special industry category” in the discussions that will need to be held for the future rebuild and for all to use this time wisely. There is now more than ever a common need to fully implement the World Trade Organisation Agreement on Trade Facilitation.

While sympathy goes to those affected by the Covid-19, FIATA is mindful of the social, community and economic impact faced by all. FIATA’s President pledges through its National Association Members to meet those trade challenges to the best of freight forwarders collective capabilities.

Zürich 19.03.2020. FIATA, la Fédération Internationale des Associations de Transitaires et Assimilés, a exprimé ce jour son inquiétude quant à l'impact de la crise actuelle du Coronavirus sur la circulation des marchandises et appelle à l'assouplissement des positions monopolistiques de diverses entités gouvernementales et non gouvernementales dans les ports et aéroports en matière de charges fiscales. Avec l'escalade rapide des restrictions de voyage et la fermeture des frontières en ce qui concerne la circulation des personnes, la circulation des marchandises a également été compromise.

Le président de FIATA, Basil Pietersen, a noté dans un communiqué aux membres que nous vivons une époque sans précédent et que dans la plupart de nos mémoires, le monde n'a été confronté à une telle crise globale. La priorité étant pour les Etats de combattre la pandémie sanitaire mondiale, FIATA estime qu’il est également nécessaire de se concentrer sur les résultats commerciaux qui déterminent nos résultats sociétaux et personnels.

Il est établi que la relance des économies nationales est totalement liée au commerce mondial et si les gouvernements peuvent définir la politique en la matière, ce sont les commerçants qui font le commerce et les membres de FIATA qui assurent la livraison de ces marchandises aux clients et aux consommateurs. Les compagnies maritimes, les compagnies aériennes et les autres opérateurs assurent les moyens de transport et sont choisis en fonction du mode le plus rentable par le transitaire international. Ainsi, dans ce combat logistique, les transitaires sont un élément clé.

Le rôle des membres de FIATA est d'assurer l'approvisionnement en nourriture et en produits de première nécessité pour les communautés et les économies et leurs citoyens touchés par le Covid-19. Alors que FIATA note la résilience de ses associations nationales et de leurs membres, la FIATA appelle la communauté à s'unir et à transmettre un message clair et concis à leurs gouvernements nationaux respectifs, à savoir que les transitaires seront essentiels à la relance de chaque économie et qu'ils doivent être au cœur de la réforme sur la facilitation du commerce.

FIATA a demandé aux associations nationales de relever le défi de leurs membres en étant reconnus comme une "catégorie spéciale de l'industrie" dans les discussions qui devront avoir lieu pour la reconstruction future en utilisant ce temps à bon escient. Il existe aujourd'hui plus que jamais un besoin commun de mettre pleinement en œuvre l'accord de l'Organisation Mondiale du Commerce sur la facilitation des échanges.

Alors que sa sympathie va aux personnes touchées par le Covid-19, FIATA est aussi consciente de l'impact social, communautaire et économique auquel tous sont confrontés. Le président de FIATA s'engage, par l'intermédiaire de ses associations nationales membres, à relever ces défis commerciaux au mieux des capacités collectives des transitaires.

FIATA - Gemeinsam sind wir stark

Zürich 19.03.2020 Die FIATA, die Internationale Föderation der Spediteurorganisationen, hat heute ihre Besorgnis über die Auswirkungen der aktuellen Coronavirus-Krise auf den Warenverkehr zum Ausdruck gebracht und fordert die Lockerung der Monopolstellung verschiedener staatlicher und nichtstaatlicher Stellen in Häfen und Flughäfen hinsichtlich steuerlicher Belastungen. Durch die rasche Eskalation der Reisebeschränkungen und die Schließung der Grenzen für den Personenverkehr wurde auch der Warenverkehr beeinträchtigt. Der Präsident der FIATA, Basil Pietersen, stellte in einer Mitteilung an die Mitglieder fest, dass dies beispiellose Zeiten sind, in denen die Welt in den meisten unserer lebenden Erinnerungen mit einer solchen globalen Krise konfrontiert war. Da die Priorität darin besteht, die globale Gesundheitspandemie durch die Regierungen zu bekämpfen, sieht die FIATA die Notwendigkeit, sich auch auf die geschäftlichen Ergebnisse zu konzentrieren, welche unsere gesellschaftlichen und persönlichen Ergebnisse vorantreiben.

Die globale Versorgungskette ist zwar gefährdet, aber weiterhin funktionsfähig, wenn auch in einem sehr schwachen Zustand. Es ist bekannt, dass die Wiederbelebung der nationalen Wirtschaften vollständig mit dem globalen Handel verbunden ist, und während die Regierungen die Politik dafür festlegen können, sind es die Händler, die handeln, und die FIATA-Mitglieder, die die Lieferung dieser Güter an die Kunden und Konsumenten sicherstellen. Während die FIATA die Standfestigkeit ihrer nationalen Verbandsmitglieder und wiederum deren Mitglieder zur Kenntnis nimmt, ruft die FIATA ihre Gemeinschaft auf, sich zu vereinen und eine klare und präzise Botschaft an ihre jeweiligen nationalen Regierungen zu übermitteln, so dass die Spediteure für die Wiederbelebung jeder Wirtschaft von zentraler Bedeutung sein werden und im Mittelpunkt dessen stehen müssen, was bei der Reform der Handelserleichterungen erforderlich sein wird.

Die FIATA hat ihre nationalen Verbandsmitglieder dazu aufgerufen, sich der Herausforderung ihrer Mitglieder zu stellen, in den Diskussionen, die für den zukünftigen Wiederaufbau geführt werden müssen, als "besondere Branchenkategorie" anerkannt zu werden und dass all diese Zeit klug nutzen sollten. Es besteht jetzt mehr denn je die Notwendigkeit gemeinsam das Abkommen der Welthandelsorganisation über Handelserleichterungen vollständig umzusetzen.

Während das Mitgefühl den von Covid-19 Betroffenen gilt, ist sich die FIATA der sozialen, gemeinschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen denen alle ausgesetzt sind, auch bewusst. Der Präsident der FIATA verpflichtet sich durch seine nationalen Verbandsmitglieder, diese Herausforderungen im Handel mit den besten kollektiven Fähigkeiten der Spediteure zu bewältigen.
