Training and Sustainability: FIATA at GISS 2025 Strengthening Partnerships for Aviation Training and Sustainability

The Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) 2025, hosted by the General Civil Aviation Authorities of the United Arab Emirates and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), brought together key stakeholders from across the aviation sector to address critical challenges and opportunities in training, sustainability, and industry financing. FIATA, as an ICAO Trainer Plus Corporate Partner, was represented by the FIATA Project Officer, Sofia Aiche, at this important event, engaging with regulators, industry leaders, and training institutions to reinforce the role of freight forwarders in shaping the future of air cargo.

One of the central discussions focused on the evolution of aviation training, particularly in leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance digital learning. While AI presents opportunities to improve training efficiency, experts emphasised the need to maintain human oversight to ensure the development of essential non-technical skills. The importance of accreditation and collaboration between governments, industry, and educational institutions was also highlighted as a means to strengthen aviation workforce capabilities.

Sustainability remained a key topic, with discussions on scaling up Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production and aligning financing mechanisms to support developing countries in their transition to cleaner energy. ICAO’s new FINVEST initiative was introduced as a solution to bridge the financial gap by attracting global investment into sustainable aviation projects, infrastructure development, and training programmes.

For FIATA, the symposium was a valuable opportunity to network with industry stakeholders and engage with training centres interested in expanding their offerings to include the ICAO-FIATA Dangerous Goods by Air Training Programme. Strengthening these collaborations will ensure that freight forwarders continue to access high-quality, globally recognised training that aligns with evolving regulatory requirements.

With pressing challenges ahead, FIATA remains committed to working alongside ICAO and industry partners to advance training solutions and support the aviation sector’s  goals. For any questions on the ICAO-FIATA Dangerous Goods by Air Training Programme, please contact [email protected].

Safety and Security: Recent Microsoft MFA Breach Highlights Urgent Need for Cybersecurity Measures

A recent cybersecurity breach has exposed a weakness in Microsoft’s Multifactor Authentication (MFA) system, which is used to protect accounts on services like Outlook, OneDrive, Teams, and Azure Cloud. Hackers found a way to bypass these security measures without needing user interaction, putting millions of accounts at risk. While Microsoft has since fixed the issue, this incident is a strong reminder that cyber threats are constantly evolving.

FIATA recommends that its Members always verify the authenticity of sender email addresses and exercise caution before sharing personal data or clicking on links, especially if the request is unexpected or seems suspicious.
Additionally, FIATA advises:

  • Reviewing and updating security settings to ensure all systems are well protected.
  • Training employees to recognise phishing scams and other cyber threats.
  • Enhancing authentication methods beyond standard passwords and MFA when possible.

Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and staying informed is key. To help FIATA Members stay protected, FIATA offers the "Cybersecurity Essentials Guide – Navigating the Digital Landscape Safely." This guide provides practical steps on how to prevent cyberattacks and manage incidents from both staff and managerial perspectives. FIATA Direct Members can access it for free through the FIATA Member Area, or the guide can be purchased via the FIATA website for a very symbolic amount of CHF 15 by any other interested parties.

Additionally, FIATA would like to invite you to attend the session "Building Cyber Resilience with the World Economic Forum" at the upcoming 2025 FIATA HQ Meeting on 17 March 2025, 16:30-18:45, at the Geneva International Conference Center (CICG) in Geneva Switzerland. This session will provide insights on strengthening cybersecurity in your organisation. More information on the session is available here.

Airfreight: ReFuelEU Impact on the Aviation Industry

(source: www.easa.europa.eu)

The European Commission has expanded the list of airports within the European Union subject to the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, bringing the total to 155 for 2025. The regulation, part of the EU’s Fit for 55 package, mandates increasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blending requirements, starting at 2% in 2025.

While aircraft operators are not required to uplift SAF directly, they must ensure compliance with fuel sourcing rules to avoid penalties. Freight forwarders involved in air cargo should assess potential cost implications and monitor SAF availability at key EU airports.

What is the timeline for implementation?

ReFuelEU sets a phased timeline for increasing the use of SAF at Union airports. Beginning in 2025, SAF must account for 2% of aviation fuel, with percentages rising steadily over time.
