FIATA Publishes New Guidance on Insider Threat Prevention in the Logistics Sector
30 March 2026, Geneva - FIATA has published new Guidance titled Logistics Security: Preventing Insider Threat, providing practical recommendations to help freight forwarders and logistics operators better understand and address insider-related risks. This document was conceived under the umbrella of the FIATA Advisory Body on Safety and Security (ABSS).
As global supply chains become increasingly complex and interconnected, insider risk remains an often overlooked but critical challenge. The guidance offers a structured overview of the issue, starting with a clear definition of insider threats and an outline of how they can manifest in logistics operations.
Drawing on practical examples from the sector, the publication highlights common situations that may increase exposure to risk, while emphasising that such indicators should be used to raise awareness rather than to infer wrongdoing.
The guidance places strong emphasis on prevention, outlining key considerations across the employee lifecycle. This includes the implementation of effective management control systems, and the development of robust compliance and prevention programmes tailored to organisational needs.
In addition, the publication encourages continuous evaluation of prevention and protection measures to ensure they remain effective in a rapidly evolving risk environment. An illustrative checklist is also provided to support organisations in translating guidance into practical actions.
Insider risk demands a management response, not just a technical one. As Niels Beuck, Chair of the FIATA Advisory Body on Safety and Security, explains: "Insider threats are not a technical problem to be solved, but a management risk to be understood and controlled. With this guide, FIATA aims to support its members in recognising these risks early and provides practical, proportionate measures to manage them effectively."
