The 2023 FIATA HQ Meeting in Geneva takes place Friday 17 March evening until Tuesday 21 March evening. The 2023 theme is 'Navigating Uncertainty' and you can find an outlook of some of the planned discussions below.

The future of multimodal logistics digitalisation
This interview gives a basis for the continuation of the discussion to come at the HQ Meeting with MSC, UIC, UNECE and CHAMP. This interview features the ICC, MSC, Arab Bank (Switzerland) Ltd., CHAMP, and UNCTAD, and sets the scene for the upcoming reflection on the future of multimodal logistics digitalisation.
Sustainability at what cost?
The High-Level-Maritime Dialogue in November opened an exciting discussion on the need for decarbonisation in the shipping sector for a resilient supply chain. Forwarders can expect a deep-dive into the topic of sustainability in the maritime sector at the upcoming HQ Meeting, addressing new technologies, better fuels and helping the maritime industry to find a viable solution for decarbonisation with the expertise of energy commodity traders.
From cybersecurity to aircraft damage control for ULDs
The Advisory Body on Safety and Security session will focus on cyber security, gathering cyber crime experts, focusing on dangers, common attacks and mitigation measures, in order to help FIATA members to circumvent the dangers of the digital world.
In conjunction with AFI (Air Freight Institute), a cross-panel will also explore the topic of ULD (Unit Load Devices). Today, data shows that ULD's are the number one cause of aircraft ground damage and that there is currently a lack of understanding on ULDs inspection and maintenance. This challenges staff training and legitimate experience to treat aircrafts parts, and calls for the help of FIATA to help address this issue.

FIATA releases Quick Guide and FAQs on upcoming EU ICS2 regulations for members!
The new European Union (EU) customs Advance Cargo Information requirement, Import Control System 2.0 (ICS2 Release 2), which focuses on airfreight, is coming into force on 1 March 2023. New requirements will call for preparation from freight forwarders worldwide, exporting to the EU, in addition to economic operators within the region.
FIATA developed and released the Quick Guide on the new EU regulation as well as Frequently Asked Question on ICS2 with the focus on Release 2 for the air freight to support its members in the implementation of ICS2 and the Advanced Cargo Information requirements. The guide and FAQs were developed with the support of CAI, ABSS and AFI delegates.

FIATA brings the freight forwarding perspective to the UNECE Group of Experts on e-CMR
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Group of Experts on the operationalisation of e-CMR held its 4th session on 25-27 January at the UN Office in Geneva, to continue its work towards the digitalisation of international transport documents and the future e-CMR system. FIATA was pleased to be part of the Group of Experts' discussion, in the interest of facilitating the future of digitalisation of international transport documents for international road transport.
During this session, Mark Bromley, the Multimodal Transport Institute (MTI) Chair presented the freight forwarding/logistics perspective as well as the insights of the practical use of the CMR in Europe and former Soviet Union (FSU) countries.
FIATA continues to pursue the shared objective of digitalisation of transport documents and cross-border paperless trade facilitation to ensure ease of doing business for the benefit of its members and all parties involved in international road transport.
2M split is making waves
The 2M alliance split between ocean carriers, Maersk and the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), is making waves, whereas FIATA WG Sea Chair, Jens Roemer is not surprised. He notes that both companies have had very different strategies with MSC focusing on increasing shipping volumes and Maersk prioritising vertical integration.
Data insights from Antonella Teodoro, Senior Analyst at MDST foresaw this too, wherein an evident increase in capacity offered independently was noticed in the last quarter of 2022. Ms Teodoro notes that it will not shock the market as the carriers have two more years to prepare for this change. Maersk and MSC may still be able to individually cooperate with other alliances and consortia members, or form new alliances, though regulators need to monitor the developments closely. The reorganisation may allow forwarders more choices in the market.
